Barelas is a Hub of Albuquerque Tourism

Barelas is Home to BioParks and More!

Barelas is a neighborhood in Southwest Albuquerque with many tourists attractions and several local hotspots too. It’s just south of the Downtown/Plaza Vieja area and very close to the Rio Grande. Here are some of the destinations worth noting in the region.

Bio Parks in Barelas

Barelas is located in Southwest Albuquerque, adjacent to the Rio Grande, and it’s near the southern-most BioPark, Zoo! The Botanic Garden, Aquarium, Tingley Beach (fishing ponds open to the public), and Zoo are all part of the BioParks. The Zoo is a sizable facility with 64 acres and has been in operation for almost a century. Visitors can feed llamas, alpacas, and lorikeets as well as watch crocodile and hippo feedings. Each BioPark has its own set of benefits and will bring joy to all, whether the purpose of the visit is to entertain family in town or just have a fun day out.

The Wheels Museum and the Rio Grande Pool are two of Barelas’s most popular tourist spots. The Albuquerque Railyards, which preserves the history of transportation, has a particular emphasis on railways, among other things. And, if swimming is in the cards for the day, the Rio Grande Pool is a public swimming pool with lap lanes, lessons, and aquatic teams. One Google reviewer, R.G. shared,

“Nice, large pool, with plenty of shaded grass areas and a couple of picnic benches. Half of the pool has lap swim lanes, the other half for open recreational play/swim.  Has a kiddie pool too.  Outside food and non-alcoholic drink are ok at Albuquerque public pools.”
